2006 Winners

2006 BC Concrete Award Winners Announced

April 28, 2006, VANCOUVER – Winners for the inaugural Awards for Excellence in Concrete Construction were announced last night at a gala evening hosted by the BC Ready-Mixed Concrete Association (BCRMCA) and sponsored by the Vancouver Sun.  Nicknamed the “CONNIEs” (for CONcrete CONstuction), the awards are the industry’s highest recognition of works that exemplify vision and innovation in the use of ready-mixed concrete in a variety of applications throughout British Columbia.

The BC construction industry celebrated talent and teamwork at the sold out dinner and awards presentation at the Sutton Place Hotel, hosted by SFU Community Trust President & CEO, Michael Geller.  Geller reminded the 200 + audience of the unique opportunity they have to “design and select materials and systems that will provide a durable foundation to maintain the quality of life we enjoy in British Columbia” and applauded the efforts of the Finalists’ project teams to “contribute lasting and sustainable additions to the BC landscape, with creations that will be a part of generations to come.”

Selected from over 50 submissions, the 27 Finalists from Tofino to Penticton, competed for top honors in their categories. Winning projects from each category then competed against each other in the final category: the 2006 Grand Award for Excellence in Concrete Construction.  The winning entry, SFU Student Residences & Dining Hall, is one that the judges felt embodies overall excellence in architecture, engineering, design and construction features, and uses concrete to its fullest potential.  In particular, the judges noted the project’s “honesty” and “ability to speak to its surroundings.”

“These Awards celebrate great partnerships, commitment and innovation in the field of concrete construction,” says BCRMCA President, Rod Owen-Flood.  “This year’s winners exemplify the high caliber of expertise and hard work that is associated with the sophisticated construction market we enjoy in British Columbia.”

These teams were awarded a CONNIE for their respective winning projects in each category:
