Nutmeg Homes

Following the Kick-Off ceremony in March, which was well attended by industry, the political sphere and the media, Nutmeg mapped out an ad campaign to bring awareness to the community, primarily about the benefits of building with concrete.  They worked with 98.9JetFM to produce original ads that were both educational and entertaining (see sound byte on right).

Concurrent with construction over the summer they ran a series of radio ad campaigns as well as a series of local newspaper “educational” ads, each one highlighting a different  trade and the way in which they contributed to an energy-efficient, environmentally-friendly building.

Nutmeg Homes Ltd. ran a radio campaign throughout the summer featuring the benefits of ICF and concrete construction and highlighting both the themselves and BCRMCA.

Feed back from different sectors of the community was very encouraging in that many people heard the ads, most on several occasions and that in many cases these ads contributed to the decision made by people to visit the showhome during the Open Houses. Nutmeg's name recognition was significantly increased by the use of this medium to reach the public.

Paul Witt, owner of Nutmeg Homes Ltd. (pictured left) is congratulated by Keith Tatton of Cumberland Ready-Mix Ltd. for being selected by BC’s concrete industry to build an ICF showcase home.

The British Columbia Ready-Mixed Concrete Association (BCRMCA) is pleased to announce that Nutmeg Homes Ltd. of Comox, BC has been selected to build one of only two Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) “Homes with a Difference” in British Columbia for 2007.  The fully finished show home will be open to the public for tours beginning in September 2007.

“The ‘HOME WITH A DIFFERENCE’ program encourages the kinds of innovations that bring healthy and environmentally responsible options to homebuyers.  It also symbolizes the concrete industry’s commitment to developing economical and sustainable home building solutions that BC consumers are asking for,” explains BCRMCA President, Rod Owen-Flood.

“The industry is proud to partner with talented, leading-edge homebuilders like Paul Witt of Nutmeg Homes, and to promote ICF show homes where consumers can see, touch and experience this sustainable building technology,” adds Owen-Flood.

Paul Witt has been building ICF homes in the Comox Valley since 1999. He says there are a lot of advantages to having a home built with concrete.  “Lower energy bills, a healthier living environment, dramatic design potential and a long life-cycle are only some of the excellent benefits.  ICF houses use up to 40% less energy than the average new home in BC.  Building homes with ICF is one of the ways that BC’s homebuilders and homebuyers can help to meet the province’s lower emission targets.”

Insulated Concrete Forms or ICFs are hollow foam blocks or panels, which are stacked to form the walls of the home.  The forms are filled with steel-reinforced concrete to create a solid structure, sandwiching a high-strength, long-lasting material between two layers of rigid high-insulation foam.  The resulting walls offer solid construction that is resistant to rot while providing a draft-free, quiet, healthy and comfortable living environment.
